1/19/2024 0 Comments Parallels vs virtualboxin BootCamp : OK obviously, in PD4, same speed as native !!, in VB : far too low, and display bugs : here, you touch the limits of VB.Ībout sharing between Mac & PC host : same : VB is really working, when you install a shared folder (see my tutorial. In seemless mode, no "gost wallpaper" when you move a window.Ī good test to compare is to launch Virtual Body, an amazing 3D internet app ( ). talking about performances, you are right, VB is OK in 90% cases. It's what I've done : see my little tutorial here : For the seemless mode in VB : you can do exactly the same as PD4 : in window mode : simply move your windows task bar on the top with the mouse, and, going back to the seemless mode, you will have exactly the same. All the above didn't push me to buy the product after the evaluation period. I've heard poor stuff about the customer service I don't like the fact that Parallel's doesn't offer a student version on their website I want to support the opensource community I've since then uninstalled Parallel's 4 and now use only VBox 2.2.2. I think VBox is very close to "commercial" quality but not exactly there. I wish someone had the time to do a complete in-depth performance review of all the 3 latest offerings. I wish there was Direct3D support in VBox but since I use XP (no Vista aero direct3d effect etc) this isn't a big deal to me. Parallels also has some polished UI elements when switching in an out of seamless mode - sorta like Ubuntu's rotating cube effect.įile sharing: Works out of the box for Parallels vs some very minor setup in VBox. other times the OS X desktop is shown, but you cannot interact with it (need to exit seamless mode, minimize VBox, use OS X desktop) sometimes the windows wallpaper is shown & drawn above the OS X desktop Plus In Vbox 2.2.2 there is a bug in seamless mode where Parallels makes the start buttons and task bar buttons into dock icons and gets rid of the windows taskbar - which is more "seamless" in OS X's context. VBox creates a windows taskbar/start button just above the OS X dock - which looks very out of place. Seamless mode: Parallels has a MUCH better seamless mode. For bridged mode, in VBox, you need to create two adaptors, one for ethernet and one for wifi - which is a little clunky in my opinion. Networking: Parallels works out of the box, VirtualBox works out of the box only is you pick NAT. Well, here is what I felt about parallels 4 vs virtualbox 2.2. but I use printers with windows drivers on VB, and that's OK too ! Even for demanding apps, it's difficult to see a difference.Īlso, PD4 don't need drivers for printers. I am triying some tests to compare both, but I can tell you that it is not easy to find the winner in speed. So don't worry, if you install a complete Windows partition on VB, it is possible to import all in PD4 !! So after that i tried to import my VB partition, and it has been successfull with 2 or 3 clicks !! I've posted some questions about my boot-camp partition on Apple support, because it is read-only and PD need read/write permissions. The idea was to use my boot-camp partition, as VB can't.īut I didn't succeed at the moment. After, I upgraded my RAM to 4 Mo to have some speed, and just adjusted RAM dedicated to VB in 2 seconds. I installed W XP SP2 with only 1 Mo physical RAM on the Mac. I had some craches at install, but never after. I'm enthousiastic about VB : this is a great software. I'm using currently VB 2.0.6, as I have read some posts telling that 2.1.4 is slower for those how have upgraded !!
